Don’t Tip on Your Trip
By Community Manager - August 19th, 2008

Are you the type of driver who when finished eating their packet of crisps of drinking their bottle of water throw the empty container out of the car window. Well be warned. Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) are saying that fixed penalty notices of £50 could be issued to motorists caught on CCTV.
The anti-litter group is supporting the "Don't tip on your trip" campaign, set up by the roads maintenance firm, Amey. During national motorway litter week, Amey will be targeting drivers in the south west of Scotland where 50 tonnes of rubbish is recovered each month. Litter cleared from stretches of the M8, M73, M74, M80 and M77 every year was enough to fill two public swimming pools. If you take in the motorways, the trunk roads and all of the rural roads the cost involved in clearing up the mess is over £100m per year. Scott Lees, Transport Scotland’s area manager said:
“Clearing large volumes of needless litter on the trunk road network is a burden on the public purse and on the resources of our operating companies.
“We would strongly urge anyone who thinks it is acceptable to throw litter from their vehicle to think again.”
Councils in Scotland are now using fixed penalty fines of £50 for people caught littering on the streets and this is now going to be applied to road users as well with CCTV which can actually track the drivers and the registration numbers and send that fixed penalty notice through the post to your door. So you have now been warned take your litter home and put it in the bin. National motorway litter week, which began on Monday 18th August 2008 is supported by the RAC Foundation, Transport Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful.
