A Beautiful Mind
Vogue Cinema Lanark
Starring: Anthony Rapp, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Ed Harris, Russell Crowe, Judd Hirsch, Vivien Cardone, Joshua Lucas, Christopher Plummer
Directed by: Ron Howard
Ron Howard's Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind is a compelling look at one man's genius, his debilitating mental illness, and the fine line between the two. Nash is eccentric, socially awkward, and extremely competitive. He's chosen for a post at MIT,(Massachusetts Institute of Technology) which includes crucial code-breaking work for the US government. There, he meets a beautiful and brilliant student, Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). They marry but their happiness is threatened, as Nash, is belatedly diagnosed as schizophrenic.

The Machinist
Vogus Cinema Lanark
The Machinist is an interesting piece of work. According to DVD times: Although financed and produced by Spanish studio and shot in Barcelona, it primarily looks and feels like an American effort, taking its cue from The Sixth Sense and Christopher Nolan's Memento. The plot focuses on Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale), an industrial worker who hasn't been able to sleep for a year. Thin to the point of emaciation, some event in the past is clearly preying on his mind and preventing him from moving forward. He leads a monotonous life, his only human contact being with his unsympathetic co-workers, the waitress of the diner he frequents every night (Aitana Shez-Gij and Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh). One day, however, his life begins to change when a mysterious man, Ivan (John Sharian), begins to haunt him, and he starts experiencing bizarre and disturbing visions. Are they (and Ivan) merely figments of his imagination, or is something much more disturbing happening? Certificate 15 For further info please call LAMH on 01555 666415

Harvey
Vogue Cinema Lanark
Veta Louise Simmons (Josephine Hull) hopes to arrange a wonderful marriage for daughter Myrtle May (Victoria Horne) in the upper echelons of society. There's one problem: her wealthy brother Elwood P. Dowd (James Stewart) has an imaginary pal, a six-foot-three rabbit called Harvey. After Elwood accidently wrecks a party by introducing Harvey to everyone, Veta decides to have him committed.
Unfortunately, when Veta takes Elwood to the sanatorium, the staff come to think that the fluttery socialite is crazy, and is trying to get her sunny brother out of the way. So they lock her up, and let him go. After that mistake is straightened out, the psychiatric staff and Elwood's long-suffering family try to find him.... and Harvey.
According to a review on Amazon by E. A Solinas "Well, I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it." That cheerful comment sets the tone for "Harvey," a movie about a lovable guy whose way of dealing with the harshness of reality is simple: Make his own.
If we ever saw Elwood P. Dowd ("Here, let me give you one of my cards") in a car, the bumper sticker would probably say, "Reality is highly overrated." The big theme of the movie is that reality can be harsh, and that it's not necessarily a bad thing to lapse out of it into the fantasies of our own minds. If Elwood isn't dangerous and is otherwise normal, who cares if he has an imaginary friend?

Benny and Joon
Vogue Cinema Lanark
What is Benny and Joon about? Well Amazon says Longing for a romantic Hollywood film that will make your heart leap but not have you reaching for the sick bucket? Try Benny & Joon. Few mainstream US films manage to walk the thin line between emotion and schmaltz, but here is one film that pulls it off admirably. In the wrong hands the concept of marrying love and mental illness could have been a disaster but, as with the low-budget British film Some Voices, Benny & Joon manages to extract genuine humour and warmth from the subject. As the brother and sister of the title, the relationship between Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson is central to the story, Benny desperately trying to keep home and job together while looking after Joon. Their lives take an unexpected turn with the arrival of Sam, a brilliantly comic turn by Johnny Depp, as gradually the characters learn that the happiness that all thought beyond them is within their grasp. Depp adds yet another character to his liturgy of slightly odd outsiders but plays it with such panache, this time drawing heavily on Buster Keaton, that you cannot help but fall for him. Indeed, there is not a single character here that you would not wish well.
